An Inspring Chat With Koning:

1. Can you tell us a little about your childhood and growing up with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome?

Living with this heart condition does not really affect me a lot in my life; I just need to take a baby aspirin for my heart every day.

2. What were some of the biggest challenges you faced as a child, both physically and emotionally?

Some of the biggest challenges that I faced as a child, and even now, is that others make fun of how I walk because I also have cerebral palsy, which is a condition that has been a challenge for me because my muscles become very stiff from time to time.

3. How did your near-death experiences at the age of 2 shape your perspective on life?

Having my near-death experience changed my life forever because I did not know if I was ever going to come back to life. This happened to me when my heart stopped, and I was legally dead for six minutes. Then, the doctors shocked me back to life.

4. What motivated you to start the non-profit organization "Changing Children's Lives" while still in high school?

The reason I wanted to start changing children's lives was because I saw that there was a need for it. At Laguna Beach High School, where I graduated from, there were a lot of disabled children in the classes I was in, some very severely. I just felt bad for them, seeing them go through this on a daily basis. So, I thought that I could start an organization that can help disabled children get out to events by partnering with sports teams across the states.

6. Could you provide us with some examples of the impact your non-profit has had on the lives of children with disabilities?

I think a couple of ways that changing children's lives has helped others with disabilities are by inviting some of them to these sporting events, which makes them feel that they are a part of something and that they are wanted. They don't feel left out, and attending these events will create memories that they will cherish for the rest of their lives.

7. How has your personal journey with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome influenced your outlook on life and your determination to help others?

I think that having this heart condition has changed my outlook on life by reminding me that every day is precious. The question is, what are you going to do with the life that you have been given? You can overcome any obstacle or obstacles that you are facing in your life.

8. How do you overcome challenges or setbacks when trying to bring joy and inclusivity to children with disabilities?

I believe that you cannot dwell on the obstacles you face in life because we all have problems or challenges. The choice is whether we let those challenges or obstacles take over our lives. In my life, I try to choose joy even when things go wrong.

9. What personal qualities or strengths have helped you navigate through the obstacles you faced in your life?

I believe I have many strengths that have helped me through this journey. Firstly, my family has been with me from the beginning and continues to support me. Additionally, I have many different friends who have been there for me as well.

10. Are there any specific goals or dreams that you have for the future of "Changing Children's Lives"?

I believe that one of my goals for the future is to change the lives of children. I hope to help more disabled children and adults have brighter lives every day.

11. How do you stay motivated and continue to inspire others despite the physical limitations imposed by your condition?

I stay motivated by asking myself how and who I can inspire each day. I recognize that I only have one life, so I must make it count and not waste it.

13. What advice would you give to someone who is struggling with a rare medical condition or disability?

The advice that I would give someone facing a medical condition is to find out first what they have by getting it properly diagnosed so you know what you are dealing with. Go get a second opinion because a lot of doctors can be wrong about your diagnosis, and then go online and learn the most information that you can about it.
