Former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin being charged with third-degree murder in the death of George Floyd

Former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin has been taken into custody and charged with third-degree murder in the death of George Floyd, according to Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman.

Minnesota law in part defines third-degree murder as a depraved-heart murder ("without intent to effect the death of any person, causing the death of another by perpetrating an act eminently dangerous to others and evincing a depraved mind, without regard for human life").

The killing of George Floyd by former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin has spared national protest, including fires and looting.

Other charges are being sought against Chauvin, including Manslaughter.

Charges are also expected for the 3 other officers involved in the incident.
